Saturday Photo Hunt - Dirty

Photo Hunt

We recently had to clear our garden pond from weed and a giant water lily that had taken over. This is half of the plants, muck and detritus excavated:

This is George, who sits on the back doorstep smelling the flowers:

He doesn't eat much so is easy and cheap to keep, but he is a bit grubby!

***************************************************************

These are 'specially for Carver, as promised to her last week:

Hypericum calycinum, known in the UK as the Rose of Sharon. It is also called St John's Wort which is used as a homeopathic remedy for mild depression and problems with the circulatory system & nervous system.

The one on the left is a low growing, spreading shrub which does well in the sunny side of my garden, whilst the one on the right belongs to my neighbour but is climbing up a chain link fence, in the shade, so I luckily get the benefit of its lovely flowers.

It is always kind of mucky to deal with plants, especially near water. And little outside statues do have a way of getting dirty -- but you're right, there is little care involved otherwise. :-)

Hi Chris,

Thanks for posting the pictures of what you call rose of sharon in the UK. It's a lovely plant and I know St. John's Wort is supposed to have medicinal uses. I've never tried to grow it and didn't realize it had such lovely flowers. I think it's interesting how different places have different common names for plants. Even in the U.S. between states, I know people who live on the west coast (I'm on the east coast) and they call certain plants by different names than we do.

You have some good dirty choices for this weeks theme. George may be grubby but he's adorable. Take care, Carver

Excellent photos for the theme. I would like a little friend like that at my back door too.

Sorry, Mama Bear, hope the verification doesn't stop you from visiting again!

Yes, I'm very happy with George, JMB. He's no trouble unlike his friend, Mitch, who keeps bringing his little ratty friends home.

Nice to meet you, Claudie, and thanks for your kind comment.

I didn't know Rose of Sharon was St John's Wort (I must blog about my experience with that one day)!

George isn't grubby as much as mature, and as he should be.

But that detritus is fairly revolting. Can smell it from here!

Lovely collection of pictures I especially liked George but cleaning out the garden pond must definitely have been a "dirty" job :) Here's my dirty
